thanks a lot for the help, I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 on Dell Inspiron 9200 Ati Radeon 9700, the resolution that worked for me is x=1440, y=900.

You're Welcome! Just a side note, usually the widescreen monitors support 1440 x 900 for the resolution and the full screen monitors are 1024 x 768.

Today I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 but had the same issue with 7.10. I'm using an old monitor with 800 X 600 resolution (I know, I know) and the initial splash screen and logon screens are distorted. Everything is OK after that. Will this fix help? How do I undo it if it doesn't?

Jimbo: yes it should work just fine with the new 8.04. Just set the resolution for x=800 and y=600. If you are concerned about this possibly destroying your Ubuntu setup, if it possibly does not work, your splash screen will be the same as it currently is now. To undo this edit, just open the file using terminal with the command: sudo gedit /etc/usplash.conf and restore the numbers to what they were before. Hope this helps.

Can anyone recommend the robust Patch Management software for a small IT service company like mine? Does anyone use Kaseya.com or GFI.com? How do they compare to these guys I found recently: N-able N-central remote pc
? What is your best take in cost vs performance among those three? I need a good advice please... Thanks in advance!
