When trying to connect to the iTunes Store this afternoon, I could not connect and I got an error from iTunes stating that my connection timed out and that there was an unknown error -9808. So I did a bit of Googling and came up with a few solutions. The rest of this article was moved to my new blog
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Nice one , what a star! I haven't been able to down load since updating the itunes version. all sorted now!
Sherlock!
You're Welcome! This should work on all versions of iTunes including the newest 7.6.1
I had the same problem and unchecked the "Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)".
It works. Thank You.
For most people, the "Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)" will definitely fix every itunes connection problem on Windows XP.
I have seen this same solution published in lots of places. My problem is that I uncheck the "check for server certificate revocation" I hit apply, I reboot, and when I go back and check the advanced tab the box is checked again. It's like something in the system automatically rechecks the box.... Any ideas?
Anonymous: Sorry to hear about your problem. I will look into the problem and hopefully post a solution. Just wondering have you tried the other solution posted at
http://soccerislife8.blogspot.com/2008/02/itunes-connection-solutions.html (copy and paste). If you are having problems connecting to the iTunes Store only, then this solution might work for you. Also, are you running Windows XP?
"Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)"
where do you find this?
i can't!
please help!
"Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)" is located under your internet options. In Internet Explorer, go up to Tools > Internet Options. Then go to the last tab, Advanced, and scroll down to the Security section. It is the fifth box down and make sure it is unchecked. Good Luck!
great stuff... works like a charm!! :)
what about windows vista?...ive been getting the same message on mine...and ive done all that the itunes support told me to to no avail...my mother is threatening to toss my ipod if i dont get it off her comp and hooked up to my laptop
If you can find the internet options on window vista, try to find the above mentioned options. I'm sorry, i'm not able to test this because I don't have vista.
You rock, dude! Been battling the 9808 error for several days now and was ready to nuke iTunes. Thanks for making my day!
THANK YOU! I've gotten this error since Feb 07 and have unsuccessfully dealt with Apple and Itunes tech support since then. I've also spent countless hours on Apple and ITunes message boards with no resolution. I finally googled the error (which I should have done 1 year ago!) and immediately my problem is fixed. Thanks for your help since Apple was of no help at all. Although the las thing I want ot do right now is give Apple money, I need to catch up on 1 years worth of music. Thanks again.
Glad to hear my tutorial was able to help!
I tried to uncheck check for certificate revocation and i restarted my computer but when i got to check it shows it checked again. Someone please help!!
If only I had found this thread back in June! Like a previous correspondent I had done pretty well everything: down-loaded RegCure, scanned the registry, etc. Apple were hopeless, still had this persistent iTunes Error-9808!! Then I came across this thread, unchecked the "check for server certificate revocation" box and Hey Presto, I'm back in the iTunes store. Cannot thank you enough. If you're ever in Brighton I owe you a few beers...!
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Another in a long line of Kudo's mate, just bought an IPHONE and this error kept me from unlocking it despite the confused and irrelevant responses from my service provider?
Seriously
1)"Do you have a computer?"
2)"Are you sure sir?"
3) "Perhaps if you tilted it and sang Hey jude?"
Works amazingly, thanks HEAPS!!!
i also have vista, and firefox and had been getting this problem for about two weeks, to find the "check for server..." after finding this thread went through the steps, tools> options etc still ntohing, i had to go through my control panel's Internet options, advanced, scroll down to security wher eit is the fifth box, try this if u have vista
thanks a lot, you'rre a life saver btw
ack, am i the only unfortunate one? im trying to fix this on my friends computer, tried everything everyone has said. still nothing. when i went to the internet options, that was already unchecked...
i would love to see the rest of the article moved to your "new blog" but that link takes me to a blank page...
LEGEND! Thank you SO much for your help! Much appreciated!!!
made sure check for server certificate revocation was unchecked and restarted but still getting the error! what to do!
Tried to comment on your new page, but could not. This worked like a charm. I spend about an hour on the phone with Apple & they couldn't help. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
hey if you could leave that comment on my new blog that would be great! It is a new blog, just starting out, so i need some new user feedback.
thanks and glad i could help!
You are my hero! I haven't been able to use my iphone for a day!
